Intuitive eating and Health at Every Size in community settings: Dietitian's perceptions of practice barriers

Intuitive Eating (IE) and Health at Every Size (HAES) are health promotion paradigms used by dietitians in private practice more commonly than community-based where diverse vulnerable populations served. The primary objective of this study was to examine the perceived barriers facilitators that encounter when using IE HAES community nutrition settings. This phenomenological, qualitative applied a grounded theory analysis identify emergent themes from transcripts semi-structured interviews with 27 working settings United States. Dietitians reported following use IE/HAES: diet culture which often expressed as inconsistent messages patients receive media other professionals conflict providers’ messages; legislative restrictions weight-centric administrative policies; personal beliefs clients colleagues concerning weight health. occupational autonomy salient factor facilitating IE/HAES identified need for shifts attitudes about its relation achieved through research dissemination information on weight-inclusive practices. Collectively, respondents experienced systemic individual several macro-level remain elusive. unique experiences RDNs provide roadmap ongoing establish evidence base best practices, inform education training, achieve cultural move towards setting.
